The Responsibilities and Requirements of a Civil Engineer

Civil engineering is a service and profession that often crops up in conversation. They are the reason everything around you is there and works, ensuring you have great accessibility and comforts throughout your life. So, they are incredibly important – but what exactly do they do and what are their responsibilities?

Civil engineering incorporates a wide range of different job roles, ranging from construction of roads and buildings, all the way to tunnels, bridges and coastal management defence systems. The role is very vast, but incredibly coordinated to ensure that the skills and knowledge crosses over to individual projects to ensure successful outcomes.

The two important roles within civil engineering are consulting and contracting engineering. A consulting engineer’s job is to generally design a specific project, whereas contracting engineers tend to manage the physical construction – playing a significant role in ensuring the project is completed properly.

Civil engineering further encompasses a number of other specialisations, of which each is essential for successful completion of the structure, all of which are part of the role and responsibilities of any civil engineer working on project.

The engineer will analyse the site upon which the project will be constructed. Along with detailed analysis of the area it will be built upon, it is crucial that the surrounding area is also considered with the same importance. Following search and investigation, verification for feasibility will be undertaken, before moving on to the next important part.

This is where designing a plan comes into play, outlining key variables and what needs to be changed up before construction can begin, avoiding any problems or challenges further on down the time line. Developing a detailed design layout, working to the requirements of the client that has been specified.

Design and subsequent reports need to be reviewed and approved, with any potential risks and challenges of project identified. Proposals must be handed to the officials that supervise tendering processes – fulfilling rules and regulations.

It is important to keep an open dialogue with architects and consultants, allowing the easy resolution of problems. Wherever possible, construction should be completed to budget and to the set time scale, requiring the scheduling and organising of work.

The input from civil engineers is a pivotal role in the execution and completion of a construction project. Their knowledge, input and leadership is essential in projects, that can range from building, civil engineering, groundwork and coastal defence. Civil engineering North Wales companies are on hand to supply excellent services in respect to your building project.
